Routine and preventive care

General Dentistry in Mapperley, Nottingham

Finding problems while they are small, treating them properly, and keeping them from coming back.

General dentistry is the everyday care that keeps your mouth healthy: examinations, professional cleaning, fillings, root treatment and extractions. Most of it exists to prevent the expensive, uncomfortable work later.

The straight answer

What is general dentistry?

General dentistry covers the routine assessment, prevention and repair of your teeth and gums. It includes examinations, professional cleaning, fillings, root canal treatment and tooth removal. The aim is to detect disease early, restore damaged teeth with the least intervention that will work, and keep the mouth stable over the long term.

The problem it addresses

Tooth decay and gum disease are progressive and, in their early stages, painless. By the time a tooth hurts the problem is usually well advanced and the treatment needed is larger. Regular assessment exists to catch that earlier.

How it works

Your dentist examines the teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, uses X-rays where clinically indicated to see between and beneath teeth, and records changes against your previous visits. Findings drive a plan that treats what is active and monitors what is stable.

What is realistic

General dentistry manages disease rather than curing it permanently. Fillings, crowns and root treatments have a working life and eventually need repair or replacement. Prevention is what extends that life.

Why patients come to us

What routine care is actually preventing

01

"Nothing hurts, so I probably do not need to go."

Decay and gum disease are usually painless until they reach the nerve or the bone. An examination looks for the changes that come first, when a small filling or a course of cleaning is enough.

Practical outcome: smaller, cheaper, less uncomfortable treatment, and more of your own tooth kept.

02

"My gums bleed when I brush."

Bleeding gums are the earliest visible sign of gum inflammation. Left alone, gum disease damages the bone that holds teeth in place, and that loss is not reversible.

Practical outcome: professional cleaning plus a technique that actually works at home, before bone is lost.

03

"I have a tooth that twinges on cold."

Sensitivity can be exposed root surface, a worn filling, a crack, or decay reaching the nerve. Those need different treatments, which is why the assessment comes before the fix.

Practical outcome: the right treatment for the actual cause rather than a filling that does not solve it.

Potential benefits and things to consider

What this treatment gives you, and the practicalities worth knowing before you book.

Potential benefits

  • Early detection. Problems found while small are cheaper, quicker and less likely to need a root treatment or extraction.
  • Soft tissue screening. Every examination includes a check of the tongue, cheeks and other soft tissues for early signs of oral cancer.
  • Tooth-coloured repairs. White composite fillings restore function while blending with the tooth.
  • A record over time. Seeing the same clinician means changes are compared against their own previous findings.
  • Predictable spending. A monthly plan spreads examination and hygiene costs and includes a 10% treatment discount.

Things to consider

  • Attendance matters. A recall interval only works if you keep it. Gaps of several years usually mean more treatment, not less.
  • Fillings are not permanent. Every restoration has a working life and will eventually need repair or replacement.
  • X-rays are not taken every visit. They are used where clinically indicated, which means some problems between teeth cannot be seen at every appointment.
  • Home care does most of the work. Two professional cleans a year cannot offset poor daily cleaning or a high-sugar diet.
  • Costs vary with what is found. The examination fee is fixed; treatment is quoted afterwards.

Suitability

Who is general dental care suitable for?

Typically a good fit

  • Adults and children of any age
  • People who have not seen a dentist for some time and want a full assessment
  • Anyone with bleeding gums, sensitivity, or a tooth that has broken
  • Patients who want to prevent problems rather than react to them

Where more assessment is needed first

  • Active infection or swelling, which is treated urgently before routine work
  • Medical conditions or medication affecting bleeding, healing or bone
  • Very high decay rates, where diet and prevention are addressed alongside repair
  • Severe dental anxiety, where the pace and sequence of care is adjusted

When we may suggest something else

  • If a case needs a specialist on the relevant GDC list, we will refer you
  • If you are in pain now, an emergency appointment comes before a routine examination

What we ask of you

Attend the examination and hygiene intervals your dentist recommends

Follow the home cleaning routine agreed with your dentist or hygienist

Tell us about medical conditions and medication, and about any changes

Your dentist will confirm whether this treatment is suitable after examining your teeth, gums, bite and wider oral health.

Step by step

What happens at a routine appointment

01

History and concerns

Your dentist asks what has brought you in, what has happened dentally before, and records your medical history and any medication.

02

Examination

Teeth, existing fillings and crowns, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues are assessed, and gum measurements are recorded where indicated.

03

X-rays where indicated

Images are taken to see between and beneath teeth when the clinical picture calls for it. They are not taken routinely at every visit.

04

Explanation and plan

You are shown what has been found and given a written plan with the recommended treatment, its sequence and its cost.

05

Treatment appointments

Anything painful or actively progressing is dealt with first. Stable findings may be monitored rather than treated.

06

Hygiene and review

Cleaning is scheduled alongside, and a recall interval is set based on your individual risk of dental disease.

The first appointment is an examination and a discussion. No treatment is carried out without your agreement, and you leave with a written plan and costs.

Comfort and aftercare

What treatment actually feels like

During treatment

  • You are talked through the whole procedure before anything starts.
  • For longer treatments you can rest at your own interval, as often as you need.
  • You can choose your own music.
  • Treatment can be paused or stopped whenever you ask.

After treatment

  • You are given clear aftercare instructions before you leave.
  • Follow-up appointments are arranged for any complex or significant treatment.
  • You can call the practice any time you are unsure about something.

Looking after your result

  • Attend at the recall interval your dentist sets. This is based on your individual risk and can range from a few months to a year or more.
  • Keep hygiene appointments. Professional cleaning removes hardened deposits that brushing cannot.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • If you grind or clench, ask about a protective night appliance. Grinding is one of the main reasons crowns, veneers and bonding fail early.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about general dentistry

How often should I have a dental examination?

There is no single correct interval. Your dentist sets one based on your individual risk of dental disease, which can range from a few months to a year or more. Patients with stable gums, few fillings and low decay risk are seen less often than those with active problems. Six months is common but it is a starting point, not a rule.

What happens during a dental examination?

Your dentist assesses your general dental health, including teeth, gums and the surrounding structures such as your tongue, cheeks and jaw. Existing fillings and crowns are checked, gum health is measured where indicated, and your bite is assessed. Findings are explained to you and written into a plan with costs.

Do I need an X-ray at every visit?

No. X-rays are taken where clinically indicated, for example to check for decay between teeth, assess bone levels, or investigate a symptom. They are not taken routinely at every appointment. Your dentist will explain why an image is needed before taking one.

Are white fillings as strong as silver ones?

Modern composite materials perform well in most situations and bond to the tooth, which can mean less healthy tooth needs removing. Amalgam remains hard-wearing in large cavities under heavy biting forces. Your dentist will explain which is more appropriate for the specific tooth, and both are available privately.

Will I be told the cost before treatment starts?

Yes. After the examination you receive a written plan setting out what is recommended, in what order, and what each item costs. Nothing is carried out without your agreement. The published fees are starting points; the plan is the figure that applies to you.

I have not been to a dentist in years. Will I be judged?

No. Long gaps are extremely common and the team is used to them. The first appointment is an assessment and a conversation, and you decide the pace afterwards. Treatment can be sequenced over months if that suits you better than doing everything at once.

I took my 7-year-old son to this dentist for the first time and was really impressed with the experience. The decor was tranquil, calming and aesthetically pleasing, which immediately created a lovely atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and the dentist was particularly helpful in making my son feel comfortable and relaxed. He had his teeth cleaned with absolutely no issues — he didn’t cry or show any signs of discomfort, which was a huge relief as a parent. Based on our first impression and experience, I would definitely recommend this dentist, especially for parents looking for a welcoming and child-friendly practice. We were very happy with our visit! Mapperley Dental Studios are exceptional! From Dr. Tamang, Mitu, Zoe and Dani, everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful and kind. I was recommended by my husband, and I have never regretted making that appointment. I was in a lot of pain due to a gum infection, and as someone with very sensitive teeth who is also quite nervous about going to the dentist, I was feeling very anxious. Dr. Tamang was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. Zoe has always been there to hold my hand and make me feel comfortable throughout my treatment. I am now a regular patient and will definitely continue coming back for my dental treatment. Thank you to the whole team for making my experience such a positive one!

Amazing! Since my first appointment, the whole team have been great. Like many people, I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but they were incredibly patient and attentive and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Time was taken at every appointment and I never felt they were in a rush, which I have felt at other practices. Made the whole experience so much easier. Thanks so much!

These guys definitely deserve 5*! The place is lovely, everyone is very friendly and professional, and they made me feel completely at ease every time. I have a bit of a “white coat syndrome” 😊, so going to the dentist isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing day out! But everyone here is so kind, reassuring, and patient that every visit so far has been a pleasant experience. Highly recommend!

Had a full check up and teeth clean, great service and would fully recommend. Dr Tamang was very thorough and helpful throughout the consulation.

Start with a consultation, not a commitment

Your first appointment is an assessment and a conversation. You leave with a written plan setting out what is recommended, in what order, and what it costs, and you decide what happens next.
