Teeth Whitening in Mapperley, Nottingham

Lightening the natural shade of your teeth without removing any tooth structure.

I couldn't be happier with my experience at Mapperley Dental Studio. I recently completed Invisalign treatment followed by teeth whitening, and the results have completely transformed my smile. The whole team made me feel welcome and at ease throughout the process. Every step was explained clearly, and any questions I had were always answered. The practice itself is modern, professional and has a really friendly atmosphere.

I was recommended Mapperley Dental Studio by my partner, just to go for a check up and clean. Before the appointment I looked through their reviews and photos as I always wanted to whiten my teeth, it was my biggest insecurity. Rupchhen was fantastic, talked me through the entire process, covered every base. It’s one of the best decisions I have ever made, the results I’ve achieved are better than I could have ever hoped for. I completed 4 weeks of teeth whitening and went from A3 to B1!

The straight answer

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a peroxide-based gel held against them in custom-made trays. The gel breaks down staining within the tooth structure itself. It changes the colour of natural tooth only and has no effect on crowns, veneers, bonding or white fillings.

The problem it treats

Teeth darken with age as enamel thins and the yellower dentine beneath becomes more visible. Tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco and some medications add further staining. Whitening addresses the shade of the tooth itself, which is different from surface staining removed by cleaning.

How it works

Impressions or scans are used to make trays that fit your teeth precisely, so the gel stays against the tooth and off the gums. You wear them at home for a set period each day over a few weeks, under your dentist's supervision.

What is realistic

Results vary between individuals and between teeth. Yellow shades generally respond better than grey. Whitening does not change the shape or position of teeth, and the result fades over months to years, so top-ups are part of the arrangement.

Why patients come to us

What whitening can and cannot address

01

"My teeth have gradually darkened with age."

This is the most predictable indication. Age-related yellowing responds well because the discolouration is within the tooth and generalised across the arch.

Practical outcome: a lighter, more even natural shade without removing any tooth structure.

02

"Coffee and red wine have stained my teeth."

Some of this is surface staining that professional cleaning removes, and some has penetrated the tooth. The two need different treatments.

Practical outcome: cleaning first to remove surface staining, then whitening only if the underlying shade is still darker than you want.

03

"One front tooth is much darker than the others."

A single dark tooth usually indicates a dead nerve, often years after an injury. External whitening will not correct it, and it needs assessing before any cosmetic treatment.

Practical outcome: the cause is diagnosed, and internal whitening of a root-treated tooth or another approach is considered.

Potential benefits and things to consider

What this treatment gives you, and the practicalities worth knowing before you book.

Potential benefits

  • No tooth structure removed. Whitening is the least invasive cosmetic treatment available.
  • Reversible. The shade relapses over time, so nothing is permanent or irreversible.
  • Custom trays. A precise fit keeps gel on the teeth and off the gums, which improves both comfort and result.
  • Supervised. Assessment first identifies decay, cracks or a dead nerve that would otherwise cause problems or a poor result.
  • Trays can be reused. Top-up gel can be used with the same trays later, provided the fit is still good.

Things to consider

  • Top-ups keep it fresh. The result relapses over months to years depending on your diet and habits and top-ups keep it looking its best.
  • Restorations do not change. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay exactly the same shade, which can leave them mismatched afterwards.
  • Sensitivity is common. Cold sensitivity during and shortly after treatment affects many patients. It is usually temporary.
  • Results vary. Grey discolouration and tetracycline staining respond less predictably than yellow shades.
  • It only changes colour. Shape, position, chips and gaps are unaffected.

Suitability

Who is teeth whitening suitable for?

Typically a good fit

  • Adults with healthy teeth and gums whose natural teeth have darkened
  • Patients with generalised yellowing rather than a single dark tooth
  • People who have had surface staining removed and want to go lighter still
  • Patients planning bonding, veneers or crowns, who should whiten first so restorations can be matched

Where more assessment is needed first

  • Untreated decay, cracks or leaking fillings, which must be dealt with first
  • Gum disease or significant gum recession, which makes treatment uncomfortable
  • A single dark tooth, which usually needs a different approach
  • Extensive visible crowns, veneers or white fillings, which will not change shade
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, where whitening is not carried out

When we may suggest something else

  • Professional cleaning alone, where the concern is surface staining
  • Internal whitening of a root-treated tooth, for a single dark tooth
  • Composite bonding or veneers, where shape needs changing as well as colour
  • Replacing discoloured old fillings, where those are the visible problem

What we ask of you

Attend the examination and hygiene intervals your dentist recommends

Follow the home cleaning routine agreed with your dentist or hygienist

Tell us about medical conditions and medication, and about any changes

Your dentist will confirm whether this treatment is suitable after examining your teeth, gums, bite and wider oral health.

Step by step

What happens during whitening treatment

01

Assessment and shade record

Your teeth and gums are examined for decay, cracks, leaking restorations and gum problems. The starting shade is recorded so the change can be measured objectively rather than by memory.

02

Cleaning first

Surface staining is removed beforehand where indicated, since some of what patients want changed comes off with professional cleaning alone.

03

Custom trays made

Digital scans are taken and used to make trays that fit your teeth precisely and keep gel off the gums.

04

Fitting and instructions

The trays are checked for fit, and you are shown exactly how much gel to use and for how long to wear them. Using more gel does not produce a better result.

05

Whitening at home

You wear the trays for the period specified over a few weeks. Sensitivity is managed by adjusting wear time or using a desensitising product.

06

Review

The final shade is checked against the starting record, and any restorations that now look mismatched are discussed.

The first appointment is an examination and a discussion. No treatment is carried out without your agreement, and you leave with a written plan and costs.

I completed 4 weeks of teeth whitening and went from A3 to B1!

Comfort and aftercare

What treatment actually feels like

During treatment

Whitening involves no drilling and no injections. Trays are fitted and checked at the practice, and the treatment itself is carried out at home.

Cold sensitivity during the whitening period is common and is not a sign of damage. Tell the practice if it becomes difficult, because wear time can be reduced or a desensitising product used.

After treatment

Avoid strongly coloured food and drink for the first 48 hours, when teeth are most prone to picking up staining. That means tea, coffee, red wine, curry and dark sauces.

Sensitivity usually settles within a few days of finishing. Contact the practice if it persists, or if you notice gum irritation where gel has overflowed the tray.

Looking after your result

  • Keep your trays somewhere safe and clean; top-up gel can be used with them later if the fit is still good.
  • Expect to top up periodically rather than assuming the result is permanent.
  • Reduce staining habits where you can, since tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco are what caused much of the original problem.
  • Attend hygiene appointments, which remove the surface staining that accumulates between top-ups.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening

How white will my teeth go?

That depends on your starting shade and on the cause of the discolouration. Yellow shades generally respond well; grey shades and tetracycline staining respond less predictably. Your dentist records your starting shade so the change can be measured objectively. No dentist can promise a specific final shade in advance.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Professional whitening carried out under dental supervision, at the concentrations legally permitted in the UK, is not associated with enamel damage. The main effect is temporary sensitivity. Risk comes from unsupervised products, ill-fitting trays that leak gel onto the gums, and whitening teeth with undetected decay or cracks.

Will it work on my crowns and fillings?

No. Whitening changes the shade of natural tooth only. Crowns, veneers, composite bonding and white fillings stay exactly as they are. If you have visible restorations at the front, they may look darker or lighter than the surrounding teeth afterwards, and replacing them to match is a separate cost worth discussing beforehand.

Why does whitening make my teeth sensitive?

The gel passes through the enamel and temporarily increases the tooth's response to cold. It is common, it is not a sign of damage, and it usually settles within days of finishing. It can be managed by reducing daily wear time, taking a break between sessions, or using a desensitising product.

How long will the result last?

Months to years, depending on your diet and habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco all shorten it. Because trays can usually be reused, topping up with fresh gel is straightforward provided the fit is still good. Treat top-ups as part of the ongoing cost.

Can I use whitening kits bought online?

It is not advisable. In the UK, tooth whitening is a dental procedure and products above a low peroxide concentration can only legally be supplied through a dentist. Online kits often use ill-fitting trays that leak gel onto the gums, and none of them involve an assessment for decay, cracks or a dead nerve beforehand.

Should I whiten before or after other cosmetic work?

Before. Whitening does not change restorations, so any bonding, veneers or crowns need to be matched to your final whitened shade rather than your current one. Doing it the other way round usually means replacing new work.

I took my 7-year-old son to this dentist for the first time and was really impressed with the experience. The decor was tranquil, calming and aesthetically pleasing, which immediately created a lovely atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and the dentist was particularly helpful in making my son feel comfortable and relaxed. He had his teeth cleaned with absolutely no issues — he didn’t cry or show any signs of discomfort, which was a huge relief as a parent. Based on our first impression and experience, I would definitely recommend this dentist, especially for parents looking for a welcoming and child-friendly practice. We were very happy with our visit! Mapperley Dental Studios are exceptional! From Dr. Tamang, Mitu, Zoe and Dani, everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful and kind. I was recommended by my husband, and I have never regretted making that appointment. I was in a lot of pain due to a gum infection, and as someone with very sensitive teeth who is also quite nervous about going to the dentist, I was feeling very anxious. Dr. Tamang was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. Zoe has always been there to hold my hand and make me feel comfortable throughout my treatment. I am now a regular patient and will definitely continue coming back for my dental treatment. Thank you to the whole team for making my experience such a positive one!

Amazing! Since my first appointment, the whole team have been great. Like many people, I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but they were incredibly patient and attentive and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Time was taken at every appointment and I never felt they were in a rush, which I have felt at other practices. Made the whole experience so much easier. Thanks so much!

These guys definitely deserve 5*! The place is lovely, everyone is very friendly and professional, and they made me feel completely at ease every time. I have a bit of a “white coat syndrome” 😊, so going to the dentist isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing day out! But everyone here is so kind, reassuring, and patient that every visit so far has been a pleasant experience. Highly recommend!
