Gum health and prevention

Dental Hygiene in Mapperley, Nottingham

Removing the hardened deposits that brushing cannot, and fixing the technique that let them build up.

Hygiene appointments treat and prevent gum disease. Cleaning removes what has already formed; the advice you leave with is what stops it forming again before the next visit.

The straight answer

What does a dental hygiene appointment involve?

A dental hygiene appointment is professional cleaning and gum care. Plaque and hardened tartar are removed from above and below the gumline using ultrasonic instruments, stained surfaces are polished, and you are shown how to clean the areas your current routine is missing. It treats and helps prevent gum disease.

The problem it treats

Plaque left undisturbed hardens into tartar within days. Tartar cannot be brushed off and it holds bacteria against the gum, causing inflammation. Untreated, that inflammation progresses to destroy the bone supporting the teeth.

How it works

Ultrasonic instruments break up deposits with high-frequency vibration and water and remove what remains, particularly below the gumline. Polishing then smooths surfaces so plaque re-forms more slowly.

What is realistic

Cleaning resets the mouth. It does not stop plaque returning. Bone already lost to gum disease does not grow back, so the aim in established cases is to stabilise rather than reverse.

Why patients come to us

What hygiene appointments are for

01

"My gums bleed every time I brush."

Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is inflammation caused by plaque sitting at the gum margin, and it is the earliest reversible stage of gum disease.

Practical outcome: with cleaning and a corrected technique, bleeding usually settles within a few weeks.

02

"I have persistent bad breath."

Bacteria in deposits below the gumline and on the tongue are a common cause. Removing the deposits addresses the source rather than masking it.

Practical outcome: the cause is treated, and you are shown how to keep it from returning.

03

"My teeth look stained despite brushing."

Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco stain the surface. Brushing does not remove set-in staining, and abrasive whitening pastes wear enamel rather than lifting it.

Practical outcome: surface staining removed safely, which for some patients is enough without whitening.

Potential benefits and things to consider

What this treatment gives you, and the practicalities worth knowing before you book.

Potential benefits

  • Removes what brushing cannot. Hardened tartar above and below the gumline cannot be shifted at home at any brushing frequency.
  • Treats early gum disease. Gum inflammation is reversible at the early stage, and cleaning is the treatment.
  • Addresses surface staining. Polishing lifts staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco.
  • Personalised technique advice. You are shown which specific areas your routine is missing, rather than general advice.
  • Supports other treatment. Gum health is stabilised before crowns, veneers, aligners or implants are placed.

Things to consider

  • It is not a one-off fix. Deposits re-form continuously. The interval between visits is what keeps them under control.
  • Teeth can feel sensitive afterwards. Exposed root surface is more sensitive once deposits covering it are removed. This usually settles within days.
  • Gums may look different. As inflammation resolves, swollen gums shrink back and teeth can look longer or gaps appear. This is healing, not damage.
  • Bone loss is permanent. Cleaning stabilises established gum disease; it does not regrow lost bone.
  • Home care does most of the work. A few appointments a year cannot compensate for inadequate daily cleaning.

Suitability

Who is a hygiene appointment suitable for?

Typically a good fit

  • Anyone with bleeding gums, tartar build-up or surface staining
  • Patients maintaining gum health at a set interval
  • People about to start orthodontic, cosmetic or implant treatment
  • Smokers and those with a high tea, coffee or red wine intake

Where more assessment is needed first

  • Advanced gum disease, which may need a longer course of treatment or referral
  • Medical conditions or medication affecting bleeding or infection risk
  • Recent implant, gum or oral surgery, where timing is adjusted
  • Severe sensitivity, which may need managing before deep cleaning

When we may suggest something else

  • If gum disease is advanced, a course of periodontal treatment rather than a single appointment may be recommended
  • If a specialist periodontist is needed, we will refer you
  • Improved home cleaning alone may be enough where deposits are minimal

What we ask of you

Attend the examination and hygiene intervals your dentist recommends

Follow the home cleaning routine agreed with your dentist or hygienist

Tell us about medical conditions and medication, and about any changes

Your dentist will confirm whether this treatment is suitable after examining your teeth, gums, bite and wider oral health.

Step by step

What happens at a hygiene appointment

01

Assessment

Gum health is checked and measured, and areas of inflammation and deposit are identified before cleaning starts.

02

Ultrasonic cleaning

High-frequency vibration and a water spray break up hardened deposits above and below the gumline.

03

Hand instrumentation

Finer deposits, particularly those below the gum margin and between teeth, are removed by hand.

04

Polishing

Surfaces are polished to lift staining and leave them smoother, so plaque re-forms more slowly.

05

Technique coaching

You are shown the specific areas your routine is missing and which interdental brush size or floss technique suits your gaps.

06

Interval agreed

The next appointment is set according to your gum health and risk, not a standard schedule.

The first appointment is an examination and a discussion. No treatment is carried out without your agreement, and you leave with a written plan and costs.

Comfort and aftercare

What treatment actually feels like

During treatment

Most patients find cleaning comfortable, though it can feel cold and ticklish where the water spray is used and tender where gums are already inflamed.

Local anaesthetic can be used where deposits below the gumline need removing and the area is sensitive. Tell the hygienist if anything is uncomfortable and treatment can be paused.

After treatment

Gums are often tender for a day or two and may bleed slightly when brushed. Teeth can feel more sensitive to cold for a few days as newly exposed surfaces settle.

Avoid staining foods and drinks for the rest of the day after polishing. Continue brushing gently even if the gums are tender, since stopping allows plaque to reform immediately.

Looking after your result

  • Attend at the recall interval your dentist sets. This is based on your individual risk and can range from a few months to a year or more.
  • Keep hygiene appointments. Professional cleaning removes hardened deposits that brushing cannot.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • If you grind or clench, ask about a protective night appliance. Grinding is one of the main reasons crowns, veneers and bonding fail early.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about dental hygiene

How often should I see the hygienist?

The interval is set individually based on your gum health, how quickly you form deposits, and your risk factors such as smoking or diabetes. Some patients need cleaning every three months; others are stable on annual visits. The membership plans include between one and four hygiene appointments a year for this reason.

Does a hygiene appointment hurt?

Most patients find it comfortable. It can feel cold and ticklish, and tender where gums are already inflamed. Where cleaning below the gumline is needed and the area is sensitive, local anaesthetic can be used. Tell the hygienist if anything is uncomfortable and treatment will be paused.

Will cleaning whiten my teeth?

Polishing removes surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter. It does not change the underlying shade of the tooth. If you want a lighter natural shade, that requires whitening, which is a separate treatment.

Why do my teeth feel sensitive afterwards?

Deposits covering exposed root surface are removed during cleaning, and root surface is more sensitive than enamel. This usually settles within a few days. A desensitising toothpaste used consistently helps, and you should tell the practice if sensitivity persists beyond a couple of weeks.

Can hygiene treatment cure gum disease?

It can reverse the earliest stage, where inflammation is limited to the gums. Once gum disease has destroyed bone around the teeth, that bone does not grow back. In established cases the aim is to stabilise the condition and stop further loss, which requires both professional cleaning and consistent daily cleaning at home.

Do I still need an examination if I see the hygienist?

Yes. A hygiene appointment treats the gums and cleans the teeth; it does not produce a full assessment of decay, existing restorations, your bite or the soft tissues, and it does not generate a treatment plan. The two appointments do different jobs.

I took my 7-year-old son to this dentist for the first time and was really impressed with the experience. The decor was tranquil, calming and aesthetically pleasing, which immediately created a lovely atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and the dentist was particularly helpful in making my son feel comfortable and relaxed. He had his teeth cleaned with absolutely no issues — he didn’t cry or show any signs of discomfort, which was a huge relief as a parent. Based on our first impression and experience, I would definitely recommend this dentist, especially for parents looking for a welcoming and child-friendly practice. We were very happy with our visit! Mapperley Dental Studios are exceptional! From Dr. Tamang, Mitu, Zoe and Dani, everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful and kind. I was recommended by my husband, and I have never regretted making that appointment. I was in a lot of pain due to a gum infection, and as someone with very sensitive teeth who is also quite nervous about going to the dentist, I was feeling very anxious. Dr. Tamang was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. Zoe has always been there to hold my hand and make me feel comfortable throughout my treatment. I am now a regular patient and will definitely continue coming back for my dental treatment. Thank you to the whole team for making my experience such a positive one!

Amazing! Since my first appointment, the whole team have been great. Like many people, I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but they were incredibly patient and attentive and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Time was taken at every appointment and I never felt they were in a rush, which I have felt at other practices. Made the whole experience so much easier. Thanks so much!

These guys definitely deserve 5*! The place is lovely, everyone is very friendly and professional, and they made me feel completely at ease every time. I have a bit of a “white coat syndrome” 😊, so going to the dentist isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing day out! But everyone here is so kind, reassuring, and patient that every visit so far has been a pleasant experience. Highly recommend!

Had a full check up and teeth clean, great service and would fully recommend. Dr Tamang was very thorough and helpful throughout the consulation.

Start with a consultation, not a commitment

Your first appointment is an assessment and a conversation. You leave with a written plan setting out what is recommended, in what order, and what it costs, and you decide what happens next.
