The straight answer

What are facial aesthetic treatments?

Facial aesthetic treatments are non-surgical procedures that use injectable products to soften lines or restore volume in the face. They are medical treatments requiring a consultation, a full medical history and informed consent. Results are temporary and treatment is repeated periodically to maintain them.

Why a dental practice

Dentists work with facial anatomy, muscles and injection technique daily, and treat within a regulated clinical environment with medical emergency protocols, sterile procedure and record keeping already in place.

How the consultation works

Your concerns are discussed, your medical history and medication are recorded, your face is assessed, and the realistic options are set out with costs in writing. You are not treated at the first appointment as a matter of course.

What is realistic

These treatments soften and refresh rather than transform. Results are temporary and wear off. Overtreatment produces an unnatural appearance, which is why a conservative, proportionate approach is the right starting point.

Why patients come to us

What patients ask about

01

"Lines have appeared that stay when my face is relaxed."

Repeated muscle movement creates lines that eventually persist at rest. Treatment options and their limits depend on how established those lines are.

Practical outcome: an honest assessment of what can realistically be softened and what cannot.

02

"I want to look refreshed, not different."

Subtlety comes from treating conservatively and reviewing, rather than aiming for a maximum effect at the first appointment.

Practical outcome: a proportionate starting point with a review, rather than an irreversible commitment.

03

"I have seen results elsewhere I did not like."

Overtreatment and poor product placement are the usual causes. A consultation that sets out what is not advisable is as important as what is.

Practical outcome: a plan that says no where appropriate, and explains why.

Potential benefits and things to consider

What this treatment gives you, and the practicalities worth knowing before you book.

Potential benefits

  • Clinical setting. Treatment in a regulated dental practice with medical emergency protocols and full record keeping in place.
  • Medical history taken. Conditions and medication are recorded and considered before anything is administered.
  • Non-surgical. No incisions, no general anaesthetic, and generally little disruption to normal activities.
  • Temporary. Because results wear off, an outcome you dislike is not permanent.
  • Written costs. You know what you are paying before agreeing to treatment.

Things to consider

  • These are medical treatments. They carry medical risks and are not equivalent to a beauty appointment.
  • Results are temporary. Maintaining an effect means repeat treatment and repeat cost indefinitely.
  • Not everyone is suitable. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain neuromuscular conditions, some medication and active skin infection all rule treatment out or require caution.
  • Expectations must be realistic. These treatments soften; they do not lift, and they do not replace surgery.
  • Complications exist. Uncommon but recognised complications include asymmetry, drooping and, with fillers, vascular events requiring urgent management.

Suitability

Who is suitable for facial aesthetic treatment?

Typically a good fit

  • Adults in good general health seeking a subtle, proportionate change
  • Patients who have had a consultation and understand what is and is not achievable
  • People who accept that results are temporary and require maintenance
  • Patients willing to start conservatively and review

Where more assessment is needed first

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, where these treatments are not carried out
  • Neuromuscular conditions and certain medications
  • Active skin infection or inflammation at the intended treatment site
  • A history of significant allergic reaction to injectable products
  • Body dysmorphic concerns or expectations that treatment cannot meet
  • Anyone under 18, for whom these treatments are not appropriate

When we may suggest something else

  • A skincare and sun protection routine, which addresses some concerns without injectables
  • Treating fewer areas conservatively and reviewing before doing more
  • Referral to a specialist practitioner for treatments outside the scope of this practice
  • No treatment, which is always reasonable for an elective cosmetic procedure

What we ask of you

Attend the examination and hygiene intervals your dentist recommends

Follow the home cleaning routine agreed with your dentist or hygienist

Tell us about medical conditions and medication, and about any changes

Your dentist will confirm whether this treatment is suitable after examining your teeth, gums, bite and wider oral health.

Step by step

What happens at a facial aesthetics appointment

01

Consultation

Your concerns are discussed and your face assessed at rest and in movement. Your full medical history, medication and any allergies are recorded.

02

Discussion of options

What can realistically be achieved is explained, along with what is not advisable and why. Risks, aftercare and cost are set out in writing.

03

Cooling-off period

Time to consider before proceeding is standard practice for elective cosmetic treatment. You should not feel pressed to be treated on the day of your consultation.

04

Treatment

The area is cleaned and the product administered. Most appointments are short. Discomfort is usually described as brief stinging.

05

Immediate aftercare

You are given written aftercare covering what to avoid over the following hours and days, and told what to look out for and who to contact.

06

Review

A review appointment assesses the result once it has settled, and any adjustment is discussed then rather than being anticipated in advance.

The first appointment is an examination and a discussion. No treatment is carried out without your agreement, and you leave with a written plan and costs.

Fees

How much do facial aesthetic treatments cost?

No facial aesthetics fees are published on the practice price list. Costs are confirmed in writing at your consultation before any treatment is agreed.

Your personalised cost is confirmed in writing after your examination. The figures above are starting prices for guidance only. Whether someone comes in for a check-up or a full cosmetic plan, the first appointment is the same: time to listen, a proper look, and a clear explanation of the options and what they cost. Everything else follows from that.

Comfort and aftercare

What treatment actually feels like

During treatment

Injections are described by most patients as a brief sting. Appointments are usually short, and a topical numbing product can be used for some treatments.

Tell the clinician if you feel unwell at any point. You can stop at any stage, including after the consultation and before treatment.

After treatment

Small raised marks, redness and occasional bruising at injection sites are common and normally settle within a few days. Follow the written aftercare given, which typically covers avoiding exercise, heat and pressure on the area for a period.

Contact the practice promptly if you develop severe or increasing pain, skin that becomes pale, mottled or unusually painful, visual changes, or signs of infection.

Looking after your result

  • Attend the review appointment so the result can be assessed once settled.
  • Use sun protection, which affects skin ageing more than most other factors.
  • Expect to repeat treatment periodically if you want to maintain the effect.
  • Raise any concern early rather than waiting for the next scheduled appointment.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about facial aesthetics

What are facial aesthetic treatments?

They are non-surgical procedures that address concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles and volume loss using injectable products. They are medical treatments requiring a consultation, a full medical history and informed consent, and the results are temporary rather than permanent.

Are they safe?

When carried out by an appropriately trained clinician after a proper consultation and medical history, using regulated products, these treatments have a well-established safety profile. That does not mean risk free. Complications, including uncommon but serious ones, are explained at consultation before you consent.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

At consultation the clinician assesses your face at rest and in movement, discusses what you would like to change, and explains which options are realistic and which are not advisable. You receive costs in writing. You should not feel pressed to decide on the day.

How long do results last?

Results are temporary and the duration depends on the treatment, the area and the individual. Maintaining an effect means repeating treatment periodically, so it is worth thinking about the ongoing cost rather than only the first appointment.

Will I be able to go back to work afterwards?

Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Redness and small raised marks at injection sites usually settle within hours, though bruising can last several days. Written aftercare will tell you what to avoid, which typically includes exercise, heat and pressure on the treated area for a period.

Who should not have these treatments?

They are not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for anyone under 18. Certain neuromuscular conditions, some medications, active infection at the treatment site and a history of significant allergic reaction to injectable products may rule treatment out or require caution. This is why a full medical history is taken.

What happens if something goes wrong?

You are given written aftercare and told exactly what to look out for and who to contact. Contact the practice promptly with severe or increasing pain, skin that becomes pale or mottled, visual changes, or signs of infection, rather than waiting.

I took my 7-year-old son to this dentist for the first time and was really impressed with the experience. The decor was tranquil, calming and aesthetically pleasing, which immediately created a lovely atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and the dentist was particularly helpful in making my son feel comfortable and relaxed. He had his teeth cleaned with absolutely no issues — he didn’t cry or show any signs of discomfort, which was a huge relief as a parent. Based on our first impression and experience, I would definitely recommend this dentist, especially for parents looking for a welcoming and child-friendly practice. We were very happy with our visit! Everything is explained clearly and simply, you’re involved throughout, and they genuinely take their time to make sure you’re comfortable and understand what they’re doing. It’s obvious that a huge amount of thought and care has gone into the whole patient experience. I honestly couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

Mapperley Dental Studios are exceptional! From Dr. Tamang, Mitu, Zoe and Dani, everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful and kind. I was recommended by my husband, and I have never regretted making that appointment. I was in a lot of pain due to a gum infection, and as someone with very sensitive teeth who is also quite nervous about going to the dentist, I was feeling very anxious. Dr. Tamang was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. Zoe has always been there to hold my hand and make me feel comfortable throughout my treatment. I am now a regular patient and will definitely continue coming back for my dental treatment. Thank you to the whole team for making my experience such a positive one!

Amazing! Since my first appointment, the whole team have been great. Like many people, I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but they were incredibly patient and attentive and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Time was taken at every appointment and I never felt they were in a rush, which I have felt at other practices. Made the whole experience so much easier. Thanks so much!

These guys definitely deserve 5*! The place is lovely, everyone is very friendly and professional, and they made me feel completely at ease every time. I have a bit of a “white coat syndrome” 😊, so going to the dentist isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing day out! But everyone here is so kind, reassuring, and patient that every visit so far has been a pleasant experience. Highly recommend!
