Appearance, assessed properly first

Cosmetic Dentistry in Mapperley, Nottingham

Choosing the least invasive treatment that will actually achieve what you want, rather than the most expensive one.

Whitening, aligners, bonding and veneers solve different problems and remove different amounts of tooth. The assessment decides which is appropriate, and health always comes before appearance.

The straight answer

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is treatment carried out primarily to improve the appearance of the teeth rather than to treat disease. It includes whitening, clear aligner tooth movement, composite bonding and veneers. Because it is elective, the assessment focuses on which option achieves the result with the least irreversible change to the teeth.

The order that matters

Decay and gum disease are treated first. Cosmetic work placed onto an unhealthy mouth fails early and can mask problems underneath. Where teeth are crooked and discoloured, moving them and whitening usually comes before considering bonding or veneers.

How the options differ

Whitening changes shade without touching the tooth. Aligners move teeth without removing any. Bonding adds material to the tooth surface and is reversible in most cases. Veneers and crowns need some tooth removal.

What is realistic

Cosmetic treatment changes appearance; it does not make teeth healthier or stronger, and in the case of veneers and crowns it makes them more dependent on the restoration. All of it needs maintaining.

Why patients come to us

What patients usually want to change

01

"My teeth have got darker over the years."

Enamel thins with age and the darker dentine beneath shows through, while tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco add surface staining on top.

Practical outcome: professional cleaning removes surface staining, and whitening addresses the underlying shade. Neither requires removing tooth.

02

"My front teeth are crowded and overlapping."

Crowding is a position problem. Covering crooked teeth with veneers treats the symptom and removes healthy enamel to do it.

Practical outcome: aligner treatment moves the teeth into position without removing any tooth structure, and often removes the need for veneers entirely.

03

"I have a chipped edge and a gap I dislike."

Small chips, worn edges and modest gaps can often be rebuilt by adding tooth-coloured composite directly to the tooth in a single visit.

Practical outcome: an immediate improvement that adds material rather than removing it, and can be repaired or removed later.

Potential benefits and things to consider

What this treatment gives you, and the practicalities worth knowing before you book.

Potential benefits

  • Options are compared. You are shown what each treatment achieves and what it costs in tooth structure, not just in pounds.
  • Same practice. Cosmetic work and your routine care stay joined up, with the same clinician monitoring both.
  • Additive options exist. Whitening, aligners and bonding all avoid permanent removal of tooth.
  • Written planning. You receive a plan with sequence and costs before anything begins.

Things to consider

  • It is elective. None of this is clinically necessary, and declining is always a reasonable option.
  • Some of it is irreversible. Veneers and crowns permanently remove enamel. Once prepared, a tooth will always need a restoration.
  • Results are not permanent. Whitening fades, bonding stains and chips, and teeth move back without retainers.
  • Maintenance is part of the deal. Retainers, top-up whitening and repair of bonding are ongoing commitments, not one-off costs.
  • Health comes first. Active decay or gum disease has to be treated before cosmetic work begins.

Suitability

Who is cosmetic dentistry suitable for?

Typically a good fit

  • Adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to change appearance
  • Patients unhappy with tooth shade, small chips, edges or modest gaps
  • People with crowding who would prefer to move teeth rather than cover them
  • Patients willing to maintain the result with retainers or top-ups

Where more assessment is needed first

  • Active decay or gum disease, which is stabilised first
  • Heavy grinding or clenching, which shortens the life of any cosmetic work
  • Significant tooth wear, where the cause needs addressing before rebuilding
  • Expectations that a treatment cannot realistically deliver
  • Patients under 18, where growth and enamel maturity affect what is appropriate

When we may suggest something else

  • Professional cleaning alone, where the concern is surface staining
  • Aligner treatment instead of veneers, where the problem is position rather than shape
  • Bonding instead of veneers, where the change needed is small
  • Doing nothing, which is always a legitimate choice for elective treatment

What we ask of you

Attend the examination and hygiene intervals your dentist recommends

Follow the home cleaning routine agreed with your dentist or hygienist

Tell us about medical conditions and medication, and about any changes

Your dentist will confirm whether this treatment is suitable after examining your teeth, gums, bite and wider oral health.

Step by step

How cosmetic treatment is planned

01

Health assessment first

A full examination establishes the condition of your teeth, gums, bite and existing restorations. Anything active is treated before cosmetic work is considered.

02

Understanding what you want

You are asked what specifically you would change and what result you are picturing, because different concerns point to very different treatments.

03

Records and planning

Photographs and digital scans, where relevant, are used to plan and to show you what is realistic.

04

Options compared in writing

You receive a plan setting out the reasonable options, what each involves, how much tooth structure each removes, what each costs, and what maintaining each requires.

05

Treatment

Work is sequenced logically: position first where teeth need moving, then shade, then shape. Reversing that order usually means redoing work.

06

Maintenance

Retainers, top-up whitening or repair of bonding are arranged as part of the plan rather than left to chance.

The first appointment is an examination and a discussion. No treatment is carried out without your agreement, and you leave with a written plan and costs.

How the cosmetic options compare

Each of these solves a different problem. The most important column is how much healthy tooth it removes.

Comfort and aftercare

What treatment actually feels like

During treatment

  • You are talked through the whole procedure before anything starts.
  • For longer treatments you can rest at your own interval, as often as you need.
  • You can choose your own music.
  • Treatment can be paused or stopped whenever you ask.

After treatment

  • You are given clear aftercare instructions before you leave.
  • Follow-up appointments are arranged for any complex or significant treatment.
  • You can call the practice any time you are unsure about something.

Looking after your result

  • Attend at the recall interval your dentist sets. This is based on your individual risk and can range from a few months to a year or more.
  • Keep hygiene appointments. Professional cleaning removes hardened deposits that brushing cannot.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, and brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • If you grind or clench, ask about a protective night appliance. Grinding is one of the main reasons crowns, veneers and bonding fail early.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about cosmetic dentistry

Where should I start if I want to improve my smile?

With an examination. Cosmetic planning depends on the condition of your teeth, gums and bite, and on which specific thing you want to change. Shade, position and shape are three different problems with three different solutions, and starting with the wrong one usually means redoing work.

Is it better to have veneers or straighten my teeth?

If the problem is position, aligners address the cause and remove no tooth structure. Veneers cover crooked teeth by permanently removing enamel, and once a tooth is prepared it will need a restoration for life. Veneers make more sense where shape and colour need changing as well as position. Your dentist will set out both.

Will whitening work on my crowns and fillings?

No. Whitening changes the shade of natural tooth only. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay exactly as they are, which can leave them looking darker or lighter than the surrounding teeth once whitening is complete. Where visible restorations exist, replacing them after whitening is often part of the plan.

How long does cosmetic work last?

It depends on the treatment and on you. Whitening fades over months to years and is topped up. Bonding typically needs repair or replacement periodically as it stains and chips. Veneers and crowns last longer but eventually need replacing. Grinding, diet and cleaning all shorten these timescales considerably.

Can I have cosmetic treatment if I have gum disease?

Not until it is stabilised. Placing bonding, veneers or crowns onto inflamed gums produces a poor result that fails early, and moving teeth with active gum disease can accelerate bone loss. Gum treatment first is not a delaying tactic, it is what makes the result last.

Do you offer payment options?

Payment options for larger plans can be discussed with the team at your appointment.

I took my 7-year-old son to this dentist for the first time and was really impressed with the experience. The decor was tranquil, calming and aesthetically pleasing, which immediately created a lovely atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and the dentist was particularly helpful in making my son feel comfortable and relaxed. He had his teeth cleaned with absolutely no issues — he didn’t cry or show any signs of discomfort, which was a huge relief as a parent. Based on our first impression and experience, I would definitely recommend this dentist, especially for parents looking for a welcoming and child-friendly practice. We were very happy with our visit! Mapperley Dental Studios are exceptional! From Dr. Tamang, Mitu, Zoe and Dani, everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful and kind. I was recommended by my husband, and I have never regretted making that appointment. I was in a lot of pain due to a gum infection, and as someone with very sensitive teeth who is also quite nervous about going to the dentist, I was feeling very anxious. Dr. Tamang was incredibly gentle and took the time to explain everything to me, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. Zoe has always been there to hold my hand and make me feel comfortable throughout my treatment. I am now a regular patient and will definitely continue coming back for my dental treatment. Thank you to the whole team for making my experience such a positive one!

Amazing! Since my first appointment, the whole team have been great. Like many people, I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but they were incredibly patient and attentive and made sure I was comfortable at all times. Time was taken at every appointment and I never felt they were in a rush, which I have felt at other practices. Made the whole experience so much easier. Thanks so much!

These guys definitely deserve 5*! The place is lovely, everyone is very friendly and professional, and they made me feel completely at ease every time. I have a bit of a “white coat syndrome” 😊, so going to the dentist isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing day out! But everyone here is so kind, reassuring, and patient that every visit so far has been a pleasant experience. Highly recommend!

Had a full check up and teeth clean, great service and would fully recommend. Dr Tamang was very thorough and helpful throughout the consulation.

Start with a consultation, not a commitment

Your first appointment is an assessment and a conversation. You leave with a written plan setting out what is recommended, in what order, and what it costs, and you decide what happens next.
